Florida State baseball disappointingly lost its opening regional matchup to St. John's by a score of 6-5. This is not something that the Seminole fan base thought would happen after Florida State went up by a score of 5-2 going into the eighth inning.
Florida State's offense has been lackluster without its superstar Myles Bailey. The season-ending injury messed up the entire flow of the offense, where they barely have any threat of power hitting. Luckily, John Stuetzer connected on a home run in the first inning and gave Florida State life in that department against St. John's.
Given the struggles of the offense, they scored five runs, which is certainly enough to win a regional baseball game against a squad that was less than the Seminoles. However, the bullpen let them down again, and this time it was one of their more reliable relievers in veteran John Abraham.
Florida State baseball has to prepare itself for Coastal Carolina's Cameron Flukey on the mound
The one team that Florida State fans were really worried about in the regional was the No. 2 seed, Coastal Carolina. The Seminoles will now be playing the Chanticleers today at 2 PM EST for an elimination game, if the weather cooperates in Tallahassee.
As I alluded to before, this is the best-case scenario for Florida State because they only have to play Coastal Carolina once. Head coach Link Jarrett needs to have his offense prepared because they will be tasked with generating runs against superstar pitcher Cameron Flukey on the mound.
FSU and Coastal Carolina fans are understandably bummed about being in losers’ bracket.

But from a pure baseball fan standpoint, it’s gonna be pretty intense to see two of the nation’s top pitchers — Cameron Flukey and Wes Mendes — going head to head with teams’ seasons on line.
Since the Chanticleers will be bringing in their best pitcher, the Seminoles will be doing the same with Wes Mendes, and runs should be at a premium today. Flukey has not had the greatest of seasons in 2026, where he has a 0-2 record with a 4.35 ERA and 29 strikeouts. With that said, Florida State could see the 2025 version of him, where he had an 8-2 record with a 3.19 ERA and 118 strikeouts (according to baseball-reference.com).
Florida State might have to prepare itself for a potential delay with the start, just like in yesterday's game against St. John's. However, the Seminoles cannot get themselves distracted and end their season prematurely.
