Let me start by saying that I am not suggesting that it was the best-case scenario that Florida State baseball lost on Friday. The Seminoles choked the game away against St. John's, as they were up by a score of 5-2 going into the eighth inning. They went on to lose by a score of 6-5.
The decision to put reliever John Abraham in that situation after he had not pitched in a month due to injury was a head-scratcher. With that said, this should take nothing away from Abraham. He is one of the best relief pitchers in college baseball.
Plus, head coach Link Jarrett is incredible. If Abraham had gotten out of the inning, we would have praised Abraham and Jarrett for the tremendous decision. It is crazy how college sports work. Winning cures everything!
Florida State baseball is backed in the corner as they are faced with elimination
Florida State baseball has its back against the wall with elimination. The good news is that they are in their Tallahassee Regional and have the fans to support them in the friendly confines of Dick Howser Stadium.
Florida State at home is a different animal. They have been playing in Dick Howser Stadium, where they have a home record of 27-5. That is why yesterday's loss against St. John's was so shocking, because we haven't seen that from this squad. They have lost three straight games and are trying to get back on track.
Unfortunately, they will have to play Coastal Carolina in an elimination game today at 2 PM EST. The Chanticleers have always been a very good baseball program, and it was a team that many fans worried about when they showed up as a No. 2 seed.
With that said, this is the best-case scenario with Florida State playing them today in an elimination because they only have to play them once. I would rather play Northern Illinois and St. John's twice. Coach Jarrett has the pressure of winning the program's first national championship, but fans know that this offense is limited without the help of Myles Bailey and likely won't make a deep run in Omaha if they survive here.
However, showing a high level of fight and determination here in the regional can go a long way in shaping his team for next season.
