Eww... The arch-rivals are adding numerous G5 assistant coaches to the staff

The arch-rival fan base cannot be happy about this.

The arch-rival Florida Gators made headlines this offseason as they hired former Tulane head football coach Jon Sumrall to lead the charge. The program wants to find consistency with their locating someone who get competing for conference and national championships.

The Gators finished with a 4-8 record on the year, which is disappointing, but they did find a way to beat Florida State to close out the year. This is something that did not make the fan base happy because the Seminoles are about to be in Year 7 of the Mike Norvell era after the program elected to retain him for 2026.

Sumrall had success at Group of Five stops such as Troy and Tulane. The Green Wave made the 12-team College Football Playoff and had to play in a rematch against the Ole Miss Rebels. While it did not go well, the arch-rival's fan base are excited to see a new era with the program.

Meanwhile, some Florida State football fans feel like they are "stuck" with Mike Norvell due to financial limitations. However, I believe that it isn't over for Norvell and he get it turned around, but it starts with being successful on the transfer portal when the period opens up on January 2nd.

One worrisome aspect for the rivals is that Sumrall is bringing a ton of coaches with from the Group of Five level.

Sumrall has been phenomenal at stops such as Troy and Tulane, where he had a combined 43-12 record over the four seasons. However, Norvell also had his success at Memphis for four seasons, where he finished with a 38-16 record.

It doesn't always mean that what worked at the Group of Five level with work with the Power Four. However, my hope is that the arch-rival Florida Gators struggle on the field during Sumrall's time in Gainesville, while Norvell finds a way to turn it around in Tallahassee.
