College football recruiting rankings will always be subjective, but most casual football fans don't know how they work, especially when talking about high school players.
There is a lot of projecting based on height, weight, and production in high school. However, there's a lot of politics involved based on which school offers or which camps players attend or not.
It's not an exact science and stars matter for sure. However, ranking transfer portal players should be much easier because it should be less projecting and more based on production to that point.
Well, that's what these recruiting sites do. Case in point, On3's top 10 quarterback rankings:
Why is Carson Beck No. 1? I'd have Mateer over him. Also, how does a player who's never played a college snap make this list, much less No. 4?
Did they watch Luke Kromenhoek play in 2024? He has some potential, but there's no way he should be that high. Maalik Murphy on this list is a travesty. The Duke offense with him as quarterback was bad. The guy ranked behind him at No. 7 should be much higher, and will replace him at Duke. Air Noland shouldn't be on this list since he had no production in his freshman season at Ohio State. How is Miller Moss ranked behind two guys who have not played a college snap, and a couple of other guys who were terrible in 2024?
Please stop taking these recruiting sites as the Holy Grail regarding player evaluation and rankings. This should be a prime example of exposing the flaws in how they do things.
