Florida State softball got a bye into the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals after winning the ACC Regular-Season Title. The Noles enter the tournament with a No. 13 RPI ranking, partly because their strength of schedule in the ACC wasn’t as tough as it could have been since they didn’t play Virginia Tech or Duke.
Florida State doesn’t have an ideal record against Quad 1 opponents, going 5-8 this season, and 38-0 against Quad 2, 3 and 4 opponents. However, the ACC Tournament could change their RPI in a big way if they can come away victorious.
The tournament is taking place in Virginia, so it’s a neutral field, and Florida State already knows its first opponent, Georgia Tech (RPI, 43).

FSU swept the Yellow Jackets on the road, though the games were competitive. It would be another Quad 1 win. Florida could potentially find a revenge spot in the semifinals if they face Stanford (RPI, 17), which would be another Quad 1 win if they won.
Virginia Tech (RPI 20) and Duke (RPI 10) are on the other side of the ACC Tournament bracket. If FSU faced either of those two teams in the finals and won, it would be another Quad 1 win, improving its Quad 1 record to 8-8.
Their overall record would be 49-8. The question is, which team currently inside the top eight would they replace? UCLA would be the most logical team because they have similar overall records, and Florida State beat them in a head-to-head matchup.
They currently are in the No. 7 spot and as the No. 3 overall seed in the B1G Tournament. They could face Oregon, and winning against them would help their cause. Oregon’s RPI is 9, but they have several Quad 2 and 3 losses.
We’ll have to see how it shakes out, but winning the ACC Regular Season and the ACC Tournament should be enough to slide into a national seed. Â
