Florida State baseball will be hosting St. John's in Game 1 of the Tallahassee Regional today at 3 PM EST inside Dick Howser Stadium. I know that fans are not thrilled with it being a day game instead of getting Dick Howser on a Friday night, but hopefully this will allow the Seminoles to get in and handle their business.
Florida State already announced that it will not be pitching its ace on Friday and will have Bryson Moore on the mound instead. This is a smart idea since they want Wes Mendes to be the starter if there is an elimination game.
However, if Florida State already has an elimination game in this regional, then they have bigger things to worry about because this regional is winnable, even though some are worried about the No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina with their championship history.
Florida State's offense has to find success in the regional if it hopes to advance
The pitching staff has done a solid job this season with Wes Mendes, Bryson Moore, and Trey Beard, and they potentially have one of the better relievers in the country coming back from an injury in John Abraham.
Pitching should not be a concern for the Seminoles. However, if the pitchers do give up four runs, for example, how will the offense be able to generate success? To be honest, first baseman Myles Bailey was the lifeblood of the team, and when he suffered the lower-body injury sliding into second base, the entire mojo of the squad vanished offensively.
The Seminoles are very inconsistent and aren't a real threat to hit home runs and change the scoreboard. To put this into perspective, Bailey still leads the team in home runs with 13, and he has been out with a season-ending injury since March 28th.
Senior Ben Barrett was someone who gave the Seminoles' offense life against the Pittsburgh Panthers in the ACC Tournament, where he connected on a grand slam to tie the game at 5 and give Florida State a chance to win the game.
Barrett was just pitching for Florida State back in the middle of April, and the coaching staff decided to switch him over to the plate. The Seminoles need the veteran to come through for them again, as this is his last ride with the program.
