ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips tries to defend Florida State football three years too late

Man, if he doesn't go one somewhere.

It was unbelievable to see an undefeated ACC champion, Florida State football, get left out of the 2023 College Football Playoffs so two SEC teams with losses could leapfrog them, with neither reaching the title game.

The very thing the committee used against Florida State was what kept Texas and Alabama from doing anything once they were given the opportunity to continue their seasons. The reasoning from the committee was that Florida State’s offense wasn’t the same without Jordan Travis.

However, Michigan’s offense wasn’t elite at full strength. Texas and Alabama couldn’t do much on offense either, and the equalizer was Florida State’s defense, which was playing at an elite level late in the season.

Despite those facts, Jim Phillips never once vouched or argued on behalf of the 2023 Florida State football team. The crazy part was the ACC had NC State’s AD, Boo Corrigan, on the Selection Committee, and he never tried to advocate for Florida State to get into the playoff, knowing it would devalue the ACC if they didn’t.

Since that happened, we’ve seen the trickle-down effect of the lack of respect for the ACC in all sports. FSU softball got snubbed last week, despite winning the ACC regular season and ACC Tournament. ACC basketball is a shell of itself when it comes to getting bids for the NCAA Tournament.

However, Jim Phillips now wants to cite the Florida State snub? Man, if he doesn’t go on somewhere with his soft self. He doesn’t stick up for the conference and allows Notre Dame to treat him like a side piece every chance they get, knowing they will never fully join the ACC in all sports.

I can’t wait until FSU has the opportunity to leave this inferior conference. They will have the opportunity to earn more money and finally compete with the other major brands in the B1G and SEC. Until then, Florida State is stuck in a second-tier conference that doesn’t get any respect, whether you win the conference or not.

Florida State Athletic Director, Michael Alford seems to think 2028 will be the year some re-shuffling happens when it comes to teams changing conferences. FSU will pay less money to leave then and the B1G/SEC TV contracts will be closer to getting renegotiated for new deals. That would be the perfect opportunity to leave.
