Florida State football has seen better days in its program, as they have endured six losing seasons in eight years. This is uncommon for a place that was built from the ground up with the legendary Bobby Bowden.
Head coach Mike Norvell is firmly on the hot seat this offseason after his team crumbled under pressure after beating Alabama in the opener. The Seminoles lost seven of their final nine games to not even achieve bowl eligibility.
Norvell is hoping that 2026 will be better, and the fan base is starving for the success that was reached in 2022 and 2023 with this regime. The Seminoles are coming to a close with spring practices and will be gearing up for the summer next. As a result, here are three things that we know about Florida State football's team heading into this season.
1. The quarterback battle between Ashton Daniels and Kevin Sperry will prolong itself
Florida State has a battle on its hands for the starting quarterback job between Ashton Daniels and Kevin Sperry. Fans thought that it would be a foregone conclusion that Norvell chose the veteran Daniels, but the staff seems to still be figuring out who that will be.
2. True freshman wide receiver Devin Carter will get plenty of playing time during the 2026 season
There is hesitancy from the fan base about anointing a true freshman wide receiver into the starting lineup, or at least meaningful snaps, after Jayvan Boggs received rave reviews last year but didn't produce after dealing with injuries. However, Devin Carter has been a consistent talking point from the coaches, and the Georgia native has continued to be a pass catcher who helps the offense.
3. The linebacker position will be much improved for the Seminoles' defense under the guidance of Ernie Sims
Florida State struggled to have consistent linebacker play. The coaching staff knew that the defense needed game-changers at the position, and went out and grabbed Southern Miss transfer Chris Jones (135 tackles in 2025) and North Carolina's Mikai Gbayor (114 tackles in career). Plus, the Seminoles got four-star signee Izayia Williams, who should add talent to the room. New position coach Ernie Sims will have fun with this group of players.
