Florida State softball has been relatively quiet in the transfer portal aside from the commitment from Stetson’s Nicole Edmiaston last week. That was a major move for Coach Lonni Alameda, as she looks to replace the production lost from Jaysoni Beachum and Isa Torres.

As noted, Florida State needs more offensive firepower in 2027, even if it had kept those two major offensive pieces. Florida State is actively looking at some portal players, but there’s a certain type they need to attract if they wish to compete with the elite teams. They need women who can change the numbers on the scoreboard and a lineup that’s dangerous 1-9.

The days of “chaos on the basepaths” appear to be over, as the game has moved to more power at the plate. Here are three ladies in the transfer portal that Florida State should be pursuing hard:

  • Kylie Doherty (No. 25 via On3 Portal Rankings): Doherty is an outfielder from Boston University who has shown tremendous progression each of her first three years in college. She batted .235 as a freshman, with seven home runs and 37 RBI. As a sophomore, she improved to .338, with 13 home runs and 46 RBI. As a junior, she improved to .404, with 27 home runs and 89 RBI, while only striking out 27 times.
  • Kendall Yarnell (No. 24 via On3 Portal Rankings): Yarnell is a utility player that FSU saw up close and personal in the Tallahassee Regional. She has batted well over .300 the past two years, and hit 15 home runs, with 46 RBI in 2026. She also had nine doubles and four triples. She will have two years of eligibility remaining.
  • Kylee Edwards (No. 9 via On3 Portal Rankings): Edwards started her career at Mississippi State as a shortstop before transferring to LSU. She has shown progression at the plate each year, improving her batting average and power at the plate. She batted .341 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI. She had eight doubles and five triples, and walked (19) more than she struck out (11). She has also improved on defense each year, only committing seven errors for a .963 fielding percentage. FSU may elect to put five-star freshman McLaine Hudson at shortstop, but if not, Edwards could find a home there. Maybe they could flip and put Hudson at third. The good news is FSU has defensive options with current players on the roster, but they just need more offensive firepower, and Edwards could help provide that.

These three players could help Florida State softball big time in 2027

FSU doesn’t seem to be in the mix for any of the highest-recruiting players in the transfer portal. I’m not sure how much they are willing to spend, but I’d have to think Doherty and Yarnell would be obtainable. Some of the bigger names in the portal are not worth what they’d likely be asking for, living off where they played previously. I think players like this would yield a better ROI for Florida State.

We’ll see who else FSU pursues, and who they get will give us a better idea of how willing they are to spend. Edmiaston falls in the same range as two of these three players.
