Running Game

Mike Norvell said the coaches spent some of the bye week looking at football and self-scouting. I’m sure they saw a ton of things they didn’t like in the run game, primarily running backs not hitting open holes and the offensive line failing to open up enough of them.

This FSU offensive line looks to be the best on paper Mike Norvell’s had, but Maurice Smith and Robert Scott have missed considerable time this season. Plus, FSU has transfer players like Jeremiah Byers and Casey Roddick playing significant minutes.

Transfer Keiondre Jones has played quite a bit too, so the coaching staff is still searching for the right combinations. FSU has been in similar situations early in the Mike Norvell era, and he’s always found a way to have a successful running game.

FSU struggled to run the ball against Wake Forest and NC State early last season, but had one of the best rushing attacks nationally in the second half of the season last year. Will we see them go back to more outside zone and less counter? If the Noles get Maurice Smith and Robert Scott back, it could change things big time for the Noles.
