FSU football: Major takeaways from Southern Miss blowout win
By Kelvin Hunt
Johnny Wilson Will Be Fine
I know many FSU fans were giving Johnny Wilson a hard time for the drops he had in the game. Listen, nobody wants to drop a pass less than Wilson. The guy is an incredibly hard-worker, and a couple of those passes were not necessarily pitch and catch type. It’s clear his confidence is shaken, and he could be banged up a bit, and why Mike Norvell had him come out in his street clothes once he came out of the game.
That’s my thoughts on it. Will Wilson drop some passes? Absolutely, but his track record suggests he’ll catch way more than he drops, he creates opportunities for other guys just by being out there and with his blocking ability.
It’s a confidence issue and the only way to overcome it is put him in situations where he can have success.
By all accounts, Wilson works incredibly hard in practice and is a team guy, so what would it look like for Mike Norvell to discard him for guys who haven’t proven anything yet?
If I’m Mike Norvell, I let Johnny Wilson know he’s still my guy, and I’m going to get the ball to him. Now, if Wilson continues to drop balls at an alarming rate, then it’s time to have another conversation.
However, until then, I make sure Johnny Wilson is a focal part of the offense and keep him involved.
