FSU football: Don’t lose confidence in Johnny Wilson
No. 4 FSU football cruised to yet another victory on Saturday night as they dominated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles by a score of 66-13 in the friendly confines of Doak Campbell Stadium.
As I alluded to in my analysis, the fans certainly went home after the contest. However, some individuals worried about the performance of wide receiver Johnny Wilson, who had several drops.
I had recently wrote an article saying that Wilson will benefit from Keon Coleman’s success against the LSU Tigers after he recorded nine receptions for 122 yards and three touchdowns.
However, that was not the case for Saturday night against Southern Miss. The Michigan State transfer accumulated three catches for 48 yards and one touchdown, while Wilson did not record a catch.
This ultimately led to the 6’7” big-bodied pass catcher getting pulled from the game early in the contest. There seems to be a huge lack of concentration and focus on the part of the former Arizona State transfer. It’s possible he could have gotten banged up, as he came down hard on a couple of those pass attempts.
Head football coach Mike Norvell always emphasizes the importance of the term “Response.” What will you do when difficult times come your way?
Will you decide to dwell on the uncomfortableness? Or will you embrace the challenges and growth from them?
We must remind ourselves that these college athletes deal with adverse situations away from the football field. As individuals, we sometimes need confidence boosters to build ourselves up.
For example, look at the performance of kicker Ryan Fitzgerald. During the 2022 season, he struggled with consistency, he started the campaign connecting on four of his nine field goal attempts. However, the Coolidge (GA) native hugely responded to adversity, and he has now converted on 10 of his last 13 attempts.
I expect Wilson will have more opportunities in their road matchup against Boston College this week. While some are quick to give up on Wilson’s ability as a receiver if the Seminoles want to get where they want to get to? Then Wilson will have to be a pivotal part of the offensive system.
It starts with giving him the utmost confidence in himself. Wilson can certainly turn this offense from elite to the best in the country.
