Special Teams

Coach John Papuchis harped on needing consistency from the special teams unit. The place kicking competition has been strong through fall camp, with both kickers showing up.

As of right now, they seem to have confidence in both, but we’ll have to see if they can continue with the same consistency. I’ve never been worried about the punter position. Alex Mastramanno is solid and played well for the most part last year.

However, I think punt return is the biggest question mark. Coach Papuchis said Keon Coleman is a natural tracker of the ball, has confidence and wants to do it. They like his size and believe he’ll be tough to tackle due to his size and speed. Papuchis mentioned Lawrance Toafili as an option.

This competition probably has a ways to go before it’s settled. FSU has been using live reps for special teams in these scrimmages, and the hope is that will pay off in actual games.

I think FSU probably has bigger and faster guys on the special teams coverage units compared to last year, so I expect those to be better in 2023.
