FSU football: 4-star WR Tawaski ‘TJ’ Abrams flips to Florida reaction
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football coaches have had a strong month of recruiting in July. They have added seven players to the 2024 recruiting class, with a No. 11 national ranking going into Tuesday night.
However, a couple of their commitments have been shaky at best, with FSU fans growing tired of wondering if they were going to stick in the class or not.
Four-star WR Tawaski “TJ” Abrams was one of those players, as he still left questions unanswered after taking his official visit to FSU in late June.
He put those wonders to bed Tuesday night by flipping his commitment to the rival Florida Gators:
Abrams committed to FSU football on January 26th sort of out of the blue, and those types of commitments always give me pause. However, he was a blue-chip wide receiver, and FSU planned to take a large number in this recruiting class.
That held true as FSU had five receiver commitments going into Tuesday night, with more blue-chip options on the recruiting board. Also, several of their commits were around the same height and weight with similar characteristics. One thing that separated Abrams was his speed.
However, FSU will be fine at the receiver position, even if they didn’t take another receiver in this recruiting cycle. It hurts from a perception standpoint to lose a blue-chip player to a rival. Abrams leaving the class drops FSU from No. 11 to 13 nationally. However, that will change if FSU adds five-star Charles Lester III to the class as many expect later this month.
Overall, it’s great to go ahead and get this sage over with and not have to deal with it as the season approaches. It also means FSU can divert those resources elsewhere instead of a player that isn’t fully committed to the class.
