Four Minute Offense

The final few minutes in the 2022 LSU game became an opportunity for FSU fans and some media folks to start pointing the finger at the defense. How could Adam Fuller allow LSU’s offense to go 99 yards in just over a minute?

There’s a lot to unpack there, but it begins with making the LSU offense execute while the clock runs. There were a ton of missed tackles that aided the LSU offense down the field. However, the defense should have never been in that position.

Firstly, the FSU offense fumbled the ball on the goal line, which would have put the game away with 1:20 remaining. However, the offensive possession before that is the key to this point. FSU received the ball from LSU with a 24-17 lead and 4:07 remaining.

All FSU has to do is maintain possession, and the game is over. To make it even easier, LSU received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which gave FSU the ball at the 40-yard line to begin the drive.

FSU went three and out and punted the ball away with 2:15 remaining. The FSU offense has to impose its will in those situations in 2023. It’s a prime reason they added the likes of Jeremiah Byers, Casey Roddick, and Keiodre Jones.

That extra beef up front should allow them to move most defensive fronts and change the line of scrimmage. When they have an opportunity to put close games away, they have to do it and not return the ball to opposing offenses.
