FSU softball: Sandercock fires no hitter against Syracuse in 5 inning run rule win
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU softball (22-6, 1-0 ACC) opened ACC play with a bang as Kathryn Sandercock fires a no-hitter in a 10-0 five-inning run-rule win.
It was a win the Noles needed after losing three consecutive games on their road trip to play top-ranked teams Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.
The Noles only needed two hits to score 10 runs as Syracuse pitchers issued 11 walks in the game.
However, Syracuse flashed the leather on a couple of magnificent plays to rob FSU batters. Every FSU softball starter on offense to reach base safely.
Kathryn Sandercock was Greg Maddux-like, only throwing 37 pitches(28 for strikes) in five innings. She struck out two and walked one with the game ending on a tailormade double play.
The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth, with neither team having much success at the plate. FSU threatened in the bottom of the first with the bases loaded and two outs but couldn’t capitalize.
That wouldn’t be the case in the bottom of the fourth inning. FSU used one hit, one error, one hit-by-pitch, and eight walks to push 10 runs across.
It was the first time the offense had produced double-digit runs since March 1st against Colgate. It was a solid win for the Noles, and you have to take what the pitchers give you.
Syracuse isn’t a good team, and I would have liked to see more balls hit hard, but it’s difficult to do that consistently when pitchers aren’t in the strike zone much.
It was good to see Sandercock so efficient with her pitches, which should bode well if she has to make another appearance during the series. Hopefully, FSU pitchers can continue that efficiency over the weekend.
The Noles will be back in action Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will air on the ACCNX Network.
