FSU basketball: Noles seeking 10th straight win over Miami Hurricanes
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU basketball (7-13, 5-4 ACC) isn’t having the season most hoped they would, as injuries and a ridiculous NCAA suspension have impacted what was possible.
However, the Noles have managed to win back-to-back wins as betting underdogs on the road before coming home to host the rival Miami Hurricanes Tuesday night. It’s always a big game since it’s Miami, but this game is extra special considering the Noles have won the last nine consecutive games in the matchup.
A 10th consecutive would be unprecedented, especially considering how the season for each team has gone. No. 20 Miami ( 15-4, 6-3 ACC) has beaten one ranked team this season (No. 6 Virginia) and has only won two of its last five. However, they’ll enter the Tucker Center as -3 betting favorites Tuesday night.
The points total over/under is 149.5, which implies a 76-73 victory for the Canes. However, the Noles have been playing much better in the last two games, and the road win against Pittsburgh in its last outing should provide more confidence heading into this game.
The Canes have four guys averaging in double figures, led by Isaiah Wong and Jordan Miller. The Canes shot 47 percent from the floor and 34 percent from the three-point line. They make 76 percent of their free throws and only average 11 turnovers per game.
This was a bad matchup for the Noles earlier this year, but the way they’ve turned it on of late gives them a shot. FSU has shot over 50 percent overall in its last two games, and 44.7 percent from three-point land.
A big part is Darin Green Jr., who’s gone over 20 points in those two games. Matthew Cleveland continues to average nearly a double-double. They’re making 76 percent of their free throws and playing better perimeter defense.
They’ll need these trends to continue to keep their streak going against the Canes. The game will air on ESPNU, with the top slated for 7 p.m.
