FSU Third Down Conversions

Would you believe it if I told you FSU football was No. 15 nationally converting third downs? The Noles have come a long way over the past couple of years.

However, one thing I’m still watching closely is the propensity to not have success at times on early downs and having to convert on third and long.

The play on the first drive of the Louisville game where Jordan Travis escaped the pocket and Johnny Wilson made a contested catch on third and nine is a prime example.

FSU has to find better success early because converting those isn’t something most teams can consistently do. The other thing is Boston College hasn’t played any offense we’d consider remotely good, but they are getting teams off the field on third down.

Opposing offenses convert third downs 32.61 percent. The Noles convert third downs at a 53 percent clip, but that’s with Jordan Travis at quarterback.

If he can’t play Saturday night, this is an area they will need to play well in to avoid having this game competitive in the fourth quarter.
