FSU football found out who their new three primary opponents would be in the ACC’s new 3-5-5 format that begins in 2023.

It’s an idea that’s been thrown around for a while and will come to fruition next year. The no division format will create more opportunities for fans to see different matchups and guarantees the two best teams in the conference will play for the national championship.

However, one aspect of the new format is three primary opponents each team will play each year.

All of those matchups can be seen below, with particular interest  to who FSU football will play:

I think it was a no-brainer the Noles would continue to play rival Miami since they play annually every year. The intrigue was, who would the other two teams play?

Most FSU football fans wanted Georgia Tech to be one of those teams since they are the closest geographically. Of course, the ACC went and gave the Noles Syracuse, located all the way in New York.

On one hand, Syracuse is routinely bad, and FSU can likely chalk that up as a win. On the other, in what world does it make sense to play Syracuse every year and not Georgia Tech? I know why the ACC would lump Clemson with FSU every year because those two teams have the propensity to give you the highest-rated games on TV, especially when both are good.

The same goes for FSU/Miami. It’s not like the ACC has many marquee games to put on TV. However, it doesn’t make the road easier for FSU to possibly play Clemson or Miami twice to win an ACC conference title.

I think I would have liked to have seen FSU play Georgia Tech, Miami, and anyone else that likely won’t compete for a conference title. Of course, time changes things, and who knows how much longer Clemson will play at a high level since they went decades as an afterthought.

If FSU football does what it’s supposed to do, it ultimately doesn’t matter who is on the schedule, but it simply makes more sense to have Georgia Tech instead of Syracuse as a primary game.
