FSU basketball: Next three games will answer lots of questions
By Kelvin Hunt
If you gave FSU basketball fans truth serum, most of them would not have predicted the Noles to be in first place in the ACC Conference during this point in the season.
Disappointing losses against Syracuse and South Carolina and an overtime win against Boston University had the team looking like they were far away from contending for an ACC title, much less make the NCAA Tournament.
However, an improbable six-game winning streak with three wins over two teams at the top of the conference changed that perspective.
I said it would take time for the team to form chemistry with so many new faces, and I expected them to be a tough team to beat by the time February rolled around after a blowout loss against Purdue:
"“I think the team is improving and will be a tough team to beat by the time February rolls around. Also, it’s not like the ACC is the ACC of old, as there are a lot of bad teams in the league right now.”"
They are a bit ahead of schedule, considering who they beat in the past couple of weeks. At this point, FSU basketball should make the NCAA Tournament barring total destruction down the stretch.
However, the next three games will tell us a lot about this team. The Noles completed four games in eight days with the win over Miami Saturday but will have sufficient rest before taking on a lowly Georgia Tech team on the road Wednesday night.
KenPom ranks Georgia Tech No. 138, Virginia Tech No. 37, and Clemson No. 63. Miami ranks No. 62, and Duke is No. 10 for comparison’s sake. Two of the three games will be on the road, but these games will be a great barometer to see who this team truly is.
If they can go 3-0 or 2-1 at worst, I think we can buy this team and accept they have come into their own. Anything less than that, and I think we can chalk it up to the team playing to their level of competition. It’s still a young team, and it’ll be interesting to see how they handle knowing the target is on their back now. I can’t wait to see how they look on Wednesday night. Will it be a continuation of the second half of the Miami game or closer to the first half?
