FSU baseball adds transfer catcher Brock Mathis from Oklahoma St.
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball lost a lot of production from the catcher position, with Matheu Nelson selected with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft.
He led the team in batting average, home runs, RBI’s and was the winner of the Buster Posey Award as college baseball’s best catcher.
Nelson carried FSU baseball at times last season and saw its offense become anemic at times, striking out around 30 percent of their at-bats.
Nelson also helped lead one of the best young pitcher staff in the nation from behind the plate while throwing out 40 percent of would-be base stealers.
Now it looks like the Noles will bring in another experienced player to help a young team in 2022.
Oklahoma State graduate transfer catcher Brock Mathis implied he’ll be heading to Tallahassee via his Twitter account Monday:
Mathis began his college career at LSU before transferring to Oklahoma State. He played 35 games last season, batting .226 with seven home runs and 27 RBI’s. He struck out 43 times in 124 at-bats and threw out 19 percent of would-be base stealers.
Colton Vincent was the only other catcher to see action behind the plate for the Noles last year. He played in 15 games with three starts and had two hits in 17 at-bats. There’s also Sebastian Jimenez, who redshirted last season after suffering an injury.
There isn’t a proven commodity that can replace Matheu Nelson, and he’s not a player you can simply replace anyways. It looks like FSU baseball will look to throw some numbers at the position and see what shakes from it with the season fewer than eight weeks away.
Mathis brings three years of experience and hasn’t set the world on fire offensive, but his experience should be helpful to a group of players limited in that department.
