Scenario

What if Miami decides to keep Manny Diaz for 2022 and Lashlee takes the SMU job? That means Diaz would have to hire a new offensive coordinator, although he may not be the coach in 2023 if the new athletic director decides to go in a different direction.

What respectable offensive coordinator would be interested in joining that situation? They’d likely have to dump a ton of money, similar to the situation FSU football had with Kendal Briles and Willie Taggart after the end of the 2018 season.

Money is something Miami has reportedly decided to invest in their football program moving forward. Would it be worth it if there’s a good chance Diaz isn’t there in a year? One other aspect is how hiring a new offensive coordinator would affect the team.

They’d lose continuity with players having to learn a new offensive playbook, and who knows, some players may opt to hit the transfer portal if the new hire isn’t to their liking. One scenario could be Miami firing Diaz and promoting Lashlee to head coach, and spending money on a good defensive coordinator.

However, do they think Lashlee would be up for the job when he’s never been a head coach anywhere? What respected defensive coordinator would have enough trust to work for him? Miami could fire Diaz and hire someone, but could they get who they wanted before USC, LSU, or Florida made hires?
