FSU football: ‘Noles defense has improved, but is it enough?
By Kelvin Hunt
One of the hot topics for FSU football this season has been Adam Fuller and the FSU defense. The defense was historically bad last season, and many FSU fans wanted Mike Norvell to fire him after one season, despite not having a full spring, summer, and fall to implement his defense or build trust with his players.
Not to mention most of the players he inherited were not very good, and why a great deal of the production from the 2021 team has come from players obtained through the transfer portal.
Adam Fuller had a full offseason to implement things and assess what the players on the roster were capable of in different roles.
The results were mixed, but I have been a firm believer the defense was not why FSU started 0-4. Three FSU turnovers in the Notre Dame game, and the FSU offense mustering 17 points against Jacksonville State for starters.
The offense turned the ball over six times against Wake Forest. The first half of the Louisville game is the first game where I was thinking this looks like a replay of 2020, but they held Louisville scoreless in the second half. Whether Louisville backed off a little or not, an FSU defense hadn’t done that to anyone in forever.
Fuller did make an arguably firable call on the last play of the Jacksonville State game, but I maintain only scoring 17 points on offense was just as bad. Nevertheless, we’ve seen some growth on the defense, and they look improved compared to last year.
The question is, it enough improvement to give Adam Fuller another year? I can see the pros and cons to both sides of the argument, but I’m leaning towards giving him another year at the moment. However, the next four games will be critical in ultimately determining his fate. Let’s take a look at where the improvement has come as we’re comparing eight games from last year until now.
