FSU football: 3 takeways from ‘Noles loss against Clemson

Alex Mastromanno played a good game and helped flip field position for the Noles a couple of times. He averaged 42.5 yards per punt, and Clemson only returned one punt out of eight.
Ryan Fitzgerald had a costly error, missing the extra point on the first FSU touchdown. I know many fans said that error would come back to bite FSU, and it did.
The missed extra-point forced FSU to need touchdowns to take the lead later in the game instead of field goals. It also meant FSU couldn’t tie the game with a field goal once Clemson took the lead late.
Punt returning was horrible as the Noles failed to field several punts which cost FSU football huge field position. I talked about the importance of the field position on Monday and it came back to haunt FSU.
Treshaun Ward fielded punts and it was the first time I can recall him doing so this year. Maybe he didn’t feel comfortable trying to catch punts in situations? If that’s the case he shouldn’t be out there.
He let the ball roll 20-yards on FSU’s last possession instead of fielding the punt, knowing FSU needed a touchdown to win the game. Those mental lapses can’t happen and special teams played a part in the loss.
