FSU football got their third consecutive win with a 59-3 win over the UMASS Minutemen Saturday afternoon at Doak Campbell Stadium.

The game didn’t start well as Travis Jay fumbled the opening kickoff, which provided UMASS with their first scoring opportunity of the afternoon. The defense held, forcing a field goal, and dominated the game after.

The FSU defense had two interceptions, including a 70-yard pick-six by Jarvis Brownlee. Brownlee dropped a potential pick-six opportunity earlier, and the other interception was Jammie Robinson intercepting a pass in the endzone to stop a UMASS drive.

The Noles had only one penalty in the first half, a questionable personal foul call on third and long that extended a drive for UMASS. FSU averaged 11.3 yards per play in the first half, and the defense held UMASS to 3.9 yards per play.

That’s nearly a yard below their season average. The Noles offense scored on every possession in the first half, with Jordan Travis, Jashaun Corbin, Treshaun Ward, and DJ Williams finding the end zone.

FSU sent the starters out for one possession in the third quarter, and Chubba Purdy replaced Jordan Travis afterward. When was the last time FSU has been able to do that with a huge lead? Nevertheless, the team played OK, but there were still several things that need attention.

Thoughts

The special teams continue to be an issue on kickoff returns and coverage. The mental decisions to catch punts inside the 10-yard line are mind-boggling. They can’t make those decisions against better teams, nor can they allow better teams great field position on kickoff returns. Chubba Purdy looked good in limited reps, throwing his first touchdown of the year to Camren McDonald.

The running backs had an amazing day contributing to over 350 rushing yards. The defense played well and likely could have gotten a shutout if not for the turnover on the opening kickoff. It was a good win, and let’s get ready to try to change the program trajectory with a win over Clemson next week.
