Special Teams

Special teams are the identity of the program, and that statement couldn’t be more accurate. Listen, Mike Norvell and the coaching staff spend too much time on this unit for it to look so terrible.

The field goal kicker is still inconsistent, although it was good to see him come back and finally make a kick against Louisville after missing one and an extra point earlier(Mike Norvell should have gone for it on the fourth-down instead of kicking the FG). Those four points were costly since a touchdown would have won the game on their final possession instead of needing one and a two-point conversion to tie.

I tweeted this during the game, but the kickoff return teams are better off fair-catching everything at this point. I can’t count the number of times FSU returned a kickoff and didn’t make it to the 20-yard line. FSU averaged 21.80 yards per return. Corey Wrenn has had a couple of nice kickoff returns but wasn’t available Saturday.

What is Keyshawn Helton doing on punt returns? The Noles average 5.80 yards per return, but even more importantly, let balls hit the ground, which costs major field position. Can we do a better job of catching the ball and actually getting a return instead of fair-catching or letting the ball hit the ground?

FSU had to get more production from this unit for the amount of time spent practicing.
