FSU football: Impact of Dillan Gibbons first NIL move
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football players could begin using their NIL (name, image, and likeness) to make money as of July 1.
Several FSU players had things lined up ready to go. FSU quarterback McKenzie Milton announced a partnership with a company and will have NFT’s. Camren McDonald and Amari Gainer have websites with offerings for purchase.
However, it was graduate transfer offensive lineman Dillan Gibbons who made waves with his first attempt to use his name, image, and likeness.
Gibbons announced his intentions with this tweet on July 1:
A day later, and this is what came to fruition between the efforts of FSU and Notre Dame fans.
This announcement is what happened the next day.
Impact
This type of thing is bigger than football. It’s about people helping people, and Dillan’s thoughtfulness is a reminder of how a platform can make an impact on the lives of others.
I understand the goal has been for players to earn income off of themselves. As a former college athlete, I understand the sacrifices made. However, I hope more FSU football players will think of things like this or somehow use their name, image, and likeness to help those as well. Often when that happens, the blessing returns two-fold, and that appears to be happening for Dillan Gibbons. Not only did he help someone else, but his profile also got bigger because of it, and more companies may be willing to work with him because of it.
It doesn’t hurt he has the support of two of the most iconic programs in college football. The link is still active, and donations can still be made if you feel inclined to do so. Great job Dillan Gibbons, and hopefully, Timothy enjoys his visit to Tallahassee! Hopefully, he won’t mind if the Noles pull off the upset.
