FSU football: Initial thoughts on 2021 schedule released
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football has begun preparation for the 2021 season that begins on September 5 by hosting Notre Dame.
That’s a game we’ve known about for some time, but the remainder of the schedule with dates was released Thursday morning.
Here’s a look at the schedule:
- September 5-Notre Dame (Home)
- September 11-Jacksonville State (Home)
- September 18-Wake Forest (Away)
- September 25-Louisville (Home)
- October 2-Syracuse (Home, Family Weekend)
- October 9-North Carolina (Away)
- October 23-UMASS (Home, Homecoming)
- October 30-Clemson (Away)
- November 6-NC State (Home)
- November 13-Miami (Home)
- November 20-Boston College (Away)
- November 27-Florida (Away)
When I first look at the schedule, I notice four home games in the first five weeks of the season. That will be a boom for the local Tallahassee businesses that have taken a beating with the COVID-19 pandemic.
All of those games are winnable, with Notre Dame being the one they are most likely to lose, but the Irish are losing quite a bit from last year’s team.
FSU football scheduled UMASS for Homecoming, and I suppose this will be payback for former FSU offensive coordinator Walt Bell who a lot of fans dislike with how things went down during his departure.
The bye week is before the UMASS game, so that’s like two weeks to prepare for the toughest stretch of the schedule with Clemson, NC State, and Miami. The good news is two of those three games are in Tallahassee.
I don’t like going back to Gainesville since they didn’t have to come to Tallahassee last year.
Nevertheless, it’s a solid schedule with some winnable home games. At first glance, I could see 7-8 wins. Of course, that’s speculating because lots of roster changes could happen between now and when these games take place.
At the very least it should be a marked improvement over the 2020 season and the first winning season since 2017.
