FSU football lost a talented playmaker from its 2021 recruiting class.

FSU football started the week off hot on the recruiting trail with four-star linebacker Patrick Payton announcing his commitment to the Noles.

It was a huge get at a position of need from an in-state player with huge potential. There was more positivity from a couple of other targets that may come to fruition soon.

It looked like it was going to be the first full day of no negative news in quite some time, but four-star wide receiver commit Malik McClain threw a monkey wrench into those plans.

He announced his de-commitment from the Noles via his Twitter account Monday night:

McClain was a three-star player when the Noles offered and he committed. He recently received his fourth star after displaying all of the talents the coaches saw before most.

He’s rated as the No. 267 player overall and No. 47 wide receiver with 14 offers. The de-commitment drops the Noles back to 15 commits overall and No. 31 nationally.

Thoughts

McClain grew up in Alabama and was attending IMG Academy, and it’s not unusual to see those players attend college close to home.

There’s no question he had the potential to be a big-time playmaker for the Noles. However, similar to Malachi Wideman last recruiting cycle, it was going to be a while before he would become an impact player, as most freshman receivers struggle to acclimate.

Wideman committed to Tennessee and proceeded to have one reception for 24 yards so far this season. While it’s a loss, FSU could do well to hit the transfer portal to find more immediate help for the wide receiver position.

Three-star Joshua Burrell is the lone wide receiver commit in the class. I expect the Noles to take one more high school receiver and finish up in the transfer portal to fill needs at the position.
