FSU football lands a much-needed playmaker in its 2021 recruiting class.

The FSU football staff is looking to finish out its 2021 recruiting class on a high note and momentum seems to be forming on the recruiting trails.

Four-star linebacker Patrick Payton announced his de-commitment from Nebraska a few days ago.

The South Florida product had been committed since May 1, 2020, and was offered by the old FSU staff in June 2019.

It didn’t take long for the Noles to take advantage of the option to land the in-state blue-chip recruit. Payton announced via his Twitter account Monday afternoon:

Payton is listed as a linebacker at 6’5″ 205 pounds and reminds me a bit of former Nole, Lorenzo Featherston, whose career got cut short due to injury a few years back.

Fan Reaction

Thoughts

It has been a while since Nole fans have had something to cheer about, and Payton’s commitment checks off a lot of boxes. Payton is a blue-chip player from South Florida in a position of need.

So much for that small segment of FSU football fans that complain about not landing in-state talent.

More importantly, this commitment could signal the momentum needed as the early signing period approaches.

Payton is the 16th commitment for the 2021 recruiting cycle, and the Noles likely have about 9-10 spots remaining to fill. The majority of those spots will go to either JUCO or transfer portal players.

His commitment moves the Noles up to No. 25 nationally, with a little over a week left until the early signing period begins.

It looks like the coaching staff is doing a great job of getting current commits to sign early, and that’ll be huge as they look to close strong between then and National Signing Day in early February.
