FSU football has a void to fill in its 2021 recruiting class.

FSU football head coach Mike Norvell signed two prep quarterbacks in the 2020 recruiting cycle. It was the first time that had happened since 2017 when Bailey Hockman and James Blackman signed with the Noles.

It was a good thing he signed those two quarterbacks as both saw action in 2021, along with Blackman and Jordan Travis.

Norvell usually takes at least one quarterback every year and found a gem in the rough early in the 2021 recruiting cycle. Luke Altmyer, at the time, was a three-star quarterback before committing to FSU and seeing his recruitment blow up afterward.

The four-star Mississippi signal-caller decided to de-commit from the Noles Monday morning, citing unforeseen circumstances. It was a big hit perception wise, as FSU football fans are still reeling from Sam Howell flipping his commitment late in the 2018 recruiting cycle to North Carolina.

The situations are not close to the same but involve two high school players that ultimately choose(or will choose) to go to school in their home state. At least Altmyer and his parents were upfront and didn’t drag out the process when they knew Altmyer was not going to sign with FSU.

Ironically, Mike Norvell flipped Tate Rodemaker and Chubba Purdy late in the process last recruiting cycle.

FSU and Mike Norvell have had a tough year, and the de-commitment adds to the misery of FSU football fans. However, it’s not the end of the world as there’s no guarantee Altmyer would play as a freshman in 2021.

The good news is, Mike Norvell and the staff have options, and this is the best way to overcome Altmyer’s de-commitment.
