FSU football has lost its highest-ranked 2021 commitment.

Where there’s smoke there’s usually fire, and that seemed to be the case for FSU football with QB commit Luke Altmyer.

The four-star signal-caller committed to Mike Norvell and the Noles in February before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

After a crazy spring and summer of not being able to visit the campus, not to mention a terrible product on the field, Altmyer announced his de-commitment from the Noles Monday morning.

He announced the decision via his Twitter account:

Thoughts

Altmyer hails from Mississippi, and rumors have been rampant in the past few weeks he was looking to de-commitment and stay closer to home.

It appears the Noles are on the opposite end of the spectrum after pulling off a similar feat near this time last year when Chubba Purdy flipped from Louisville to sign with FSU during the early signing period.

Altmyer is a quarterback with the potential to be a good college quarterback and may have been able to compete for the starting job as a true freshman had he early enrolled. The Noles have Jordan Travis, Purdy, and Tate Rodemaker on the roster going into spring practice.

It’s my thought the Noles should look to take a graduate transfer quarterback regardless of if Altmyer were to stick with his commitment or not. Jordan Travis is injury prone, and Purdy needs to be able to continue to develop along with Rodemaker.

A graduate transfer quarterback would be more valuable than Altmyer right now, similar to how D’Eriq King has been for Miami this season. It’s a band-aid, but FSU has to stop the bleeding when it comes to poor quarterback play. This situation isn’t ideal for Mike Norvell and staff with some of the fan base looking for any and every reason not to support him despite some crazy obstacles out of their control.

However, as Mike Norvell preaches, it’s not the adversity, but the response to it that matters. They need to find a solution quickly.
