FSU football: Kenny Dillingham dishes on the ‘Youth Movement’ narrative
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football is in full rebuild mode in the Mike Norvell era.
FSU football announced a few players who will miss the remainder of the season due to injuries or beacause they are no longer with the program.
The team took the field against NC State Saturday night and saw a lot of young players on the field. Freshman Chubba Purdy made his first career start after appearing in the two games before that one.
Freshman Thomas Schrader made his first career start on the offensive line. Freshman Darius Washington continues to see snaps, although he was injuried a few times during the game. Freshman Maurice Smith continues to see snaps on the offensive line. Stephen Dix Jr. continues to start at the linebacker position. Dennis Briggs Jr. saw plenty of snaps on the defensive line.
Freshmen Jarvis Brownlee and Travis Jay saw plenty of action in the secondary. Some of these moves are due to injuries, but for the most part, it’s because these players are the best options at their respective positions. FSU offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham talks about the “Youth Movement” narrative during Monday’s press conference:
Thoughts
What Dillingham communicates is exactly the point I’ve been making the past couple of weeks. This team is nowhere near as talented as the 2018 team Willie Taggart took over.
There are only around 30 blue-chip players TOTAL on the roster.
The other problem is, the players on the team have lacked being developed the past few years, which falls on the last two FSU head coaches. The current coaching staff missing the spring and summer due to COVID-19 hasn’t helped either.
However, that’s why I wrote about the standard is the standard, but with expectation adjustments. This coaching staff is going to have to recruit and develop their way out of this situation. Luckily, the transfer portal is an option that could speed this rebuild up.
The key to that will be excellent evaluations, which is something this staff has shown they can do.
