FSU football: 3 takeaways from ‘Noles performance against NC State
By Kelvin Hunt
Chubba Purdy
One thing I wanted to see from Chubba Purdy was for the game to seem like it had slowed down a bit for him. I think early in the game, Mike Norvell was looking to get him involved with some easy one read passes.
Purdy made some solid decisions for the most part. There was a couple of times he should have thrown the ball away when FSU wide receivers couldn’t get open instead of taking a sack or unnecessary hits.
However, he didn’t turn the ball over and did a great job of stepping up in the pocket and using his legs instead of taking a ton of sacks while under pressure.
His stat line was good, finishing 15 of 23 for 181 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 54 rushing yards once sack yardage was removed.
The experience he gained was invaluable, and it seemed as though he was growing up a bit in the second half. How much of that was NC State’s defense not being good? How much of it was NC State being up two scores and relaxing somewhat?
I’m not sure, but I’ll take anything positive for the young signal-caller at this point. I’m not sure he’s going to evolve into a great college quarterback, but he didn’t look like he didn’t belong Saturday night either. One criticism I have is Mike Norvell using the wildcat formations and putting Purdy at wideout. Let’s trash those plays when down multiple scores and give Purdy as many reps as possible.
