FSU football had an opportunity to show they are moving in the right direction under the guidance of Mike Norvell. Here are my five takeaways from the loss.

I wrote FSU football had a chance to make a statement against Notre Dame. All they had to do was compete and not get blown out as they have against ranked opponents the past few seasons.

Fortunately, that’s what FSU football did against the No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The FSU offense had the ball on the Notre Dame five-yard line in the fourth quarter with a chance to cut the lead down to a one-score game before throwing a costly interception.

That turnover effectively ended their chances of pulling the upset, although I’m sure the defense wouldn’t have gotten a stop on Notre Dame’s next possession.

At least that’s how it felt. The Noles haven’t been competitive against a ranked opponent since beating No. 22 Boston College in 2018.

A lot of questions got answers in this game, and a hypothesis I wrote about after the Miami game seems to be proven true. I wrote how making a change at the quarterback position would change things in Tallahassee faster than most realize.

Of course, that meant the change needed to coincide with someone capable of playing the position competently.

Heck, if the FSU defense played halfway as good as we expected them to be in the preseason, the Noles would have had a real shot of pulling the upset.

Nevertheless, we are where we are right now, and here are my five takeaways from the Notre Dame game.
