FSU Football: 5 takeaways from the win vs. Jacksonville State
By Cole Maines
On a better note, the team as a whole was much more disciplined in critical situations. On offense, the team only had a few false starts and a couple of holding penalties, but the team stayed composed after the whistle.
The defense had only one pass interference penalty, and the secondary took better angles on tackles. Defensively, the Noles stopped the run well as the Gamecocks averaged less than three yards per carry.
With Kaindoh’s return, there was a sufficient presence along the edge as he was able to win some battles and helped keep the quarterback contain.
Overall there was a definite improvement overall once Travis went in the game. The run blocking was phenomenal on offense, and we have some dogs in the backfield. I like how the wideouts finally showed some “want to” and helped create gaps for the running backs, and they performed in the passing game after the quarterback switch.
One thing I wish I saw more of was the screen game, especially bubble screens and the like. It would have been a good change of pace and spread out the linebackers when they were committed to stopping the runs up the gut.
The quarterback switch was the kick in the pants that the team needed because everything was different after the switch.
