Other Surprises

I’ve listed the number of freshmen who could see the field Saturday. Some of those were not too surprising, but there were a couple of names on the depth chart I didn’t expect to see where they were.

One of the biggest surprises was Mississippi State transfer Jarrian Jones listed as a starter over Akeem Dent at the boundary cornerback position.

Dent played well for a freshman last season, although he was playing safety mostly, which isn’t his best position.

I was surprised to see freshman Jarvis Brownlee listed ahead of Meiko Dotson at field cornerback. Dotson is a backup at the boundary corner position behind Akeem Dent.

Dotson transferred from FAU and led the nation in interceptions last season, and had a good fall camp by all reports. However, Brownlee is someone Mike Norvell has mentioned by name as having a good camp as well. I was surprised Carter Boatwright wasn’t the backup at tight end.

He wasn’t listed at all, with walk-on Preston Daniels listed as the option behind backup Wyatt Rector. It was good to see Warren Thompson listed as a starter at wide receiver, as I wasn’t sure how his camp went after the whole social media fiasco.

There’s a lot of talent on this team, and it’ll be interesting to see how the depth chart changes from game to game.
