Special Team Inexperience

We have harped on this the past few years until we are garnet in the face. FSU football has to clean up this area of their game, and luckily it’s something Mike Norvell emphasizes weekly at practice.

However, all the emphasis in the world can be placed on this phase, but you can’t emphasize experience.

The lack of experience with this group, most specifically the punter and field goal kickers, does give me pause about this unit.

Tommy Martin saw his first action as a punter last season when Logan Tyler was dismissed but wasn’t great down the stretch. Freshman Alex Mastramanno has never punted in an official American football game.

Freshman placekicker Parker Ryan Fitzgerald has yet to kick a field goal in an official college game, and neither has redshirt junior Parker Grothaus.

Fortunately, the latter did do the majority of the kickoffs last season, and there is some experience returning at kickoff return and punt return. However, it’ll be interesting to see how these specific areas of special teams perform when under pressure.
