FSU football had its first fall scrimmage Saturday night. Here are my thoughts from Mike Norvell’s press conference afterward.

FSU football is continuing to work and practice as though they’ll have a football season this fall.

They wrapped up their first week of fall camp with a situational scrimmage, and Mike Norvell and coaches spoke with the media afterward.

Mike Norvell seemed upbeat and excited to speak about the scrimmage. I felt like his demeanor during the interview was along the lines of “we’re about where I thought we were.”

Mike Norvell, FSU offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham, and FSU defensive coordinator Adam Fuller’s interviews are below:

Thoughts

Offensive-The offense is inconsistent, which isn’t a huge surprise considering they haven’t had many practices, coupled with it being a new offense to learn. The offensive line has a long way to go, as Norvell noted there were critical errors that needed to be cleaned up. They are stilll working on the right combination of players.

It seemed to be boom or bust with inconsistency mixed in with hitting some explosive plays.

Norvell mentioned redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jordan Young as someone that stood out. He didn’t mention any quarterback by name and seemed to insinuate they need to work on not allowing a bad play to turn into two bad plays.

Defensive-It sounds like the defense is way ahead of the offense. The first player Norvell mentioned for redshirt freshman Travis Jay. Jay seems to be making his presence felt. He went on to speak on others in the secondary from Renardo Green and Jarvis Brownlee, who’s also standing out on special teams. Jaiden Lars-Woodbey was a player he spoke about also.

Janarius Robinson and Joshua Kaindoh flashed, and the linebackers did a good job of attacking downhill. Norvell believes this defensive line is going to be good in 2020.

Special Teams-Mike Norvell seemed pleased with the play on special teams. One name he mentioned was true freshman punter Alex Mastramanno. He showed great poise in some tough situations and played well. An improved punting game would be a welcome sight as it’s an area the Noles have struggled the past few years.

He didn’t mention anyone by name in regards to making field goals.

All in all, there’s time for players to continue separating themselves in the weeks ahead.
