Stop Comparing Apples and Oranges

FSU football fans have a bad habit of comparing FSU to other schools in recruiting. Earlier this recruiting cycle it was Tennessee and North Carolina or any team that got hot on the recruiting trail.

As of late, it’s been the Miami Hurricanes.

I’ve explained the deal between Tennessee and North Carolina several times. Those coaching staff has been in place for a while, and both programs showed progress ON the field last year.

It’s easy to look at Miami and raise your eyebrow like The Rock since they finished with the same 6-7 record as the Noles.

There are two major differences between the two programs:

  • Manny Diaz has been at Miami as the defensive coordinator or head coach since 2016.
  • Over 80 percent of their commits are from Miami, Florida, or a two-hr drive or less from Miami.

Manny Diaz didn’t all of a sudden become an ace recruiter, nor did Miami find another Nevin Shapiro to be a bagman. It’s simple, Miami has taken advantage of COVID-19 shutting down recruits visiting campuses across the nation.

I would bet the house Miami wouldn’t land half of these recruits if things were normal, and they could schedule visits to other colleges. There are no major colleges near these recruits other than Florida and FSU.

The stay at home and play for the home team message has worked for now, but if things open up and visits are allowed, I’m sure we’ll see the same level of Miami decommits too.
