Strong Safety

This position returns a lot of experience from the previous few seasons, with no absolute stars but several good players. It would not be surprising to see a few players split a lot of reps here, even with one being the primary starter.

Cyrus Fagan, the former blue-chip recruit from Mainland High School, had been affected by injury throughout his career. After a promising start last season, Fagan was once again hit with the injury bug, but put together the best year of his career in Tallahassee.

He totaled 41 tackles with an interception plus two passes defended. In the final game of last season against Arizona State, Fagan posted a 72.0 PFF grade against the Sun Devils, the best grade of his season.

Fagan should be a steady, reliable player for the Seminoles this upcoming season, and will be a huge asset in coverage.

Behind Fagan should be an interesting mix of young guys. Last season, Akeem Dent took over strong safety in Fagan’s absence, but with Dent now at cornerback, that opens a spot up for sophomore Raymond Woodie III.

Woodie only played in 10 games last season as a true freshman but did get significant playing time against in the Sun Bowl. Woodie recorded nine tackles last season, one sack and added in a forced fumble.

Woodie is a tall, athletic safety who could also see some playing time at the ‘Star’ position (which I broke down here), but it’s much more likely he sees reps at strong safety. Aside from Woodie, true freshman Jadarius Green-McKnight could also receive playing time here as well.
