FSU football is looking to climb back to prominence after three years of being mediocre at best. Fans react to future neutral site games against LSU.

FSU football has gone 18-20 over the past three seasons and LSU has gone 34-7 over the same time frame.

Two programs going in different directions with LSU winning the 2019 national title and FSU losing its Sun Bowl game to finish under .500 for the second consecutive year.

It was announced the two teams would match up in neutral site games in 2022 and 2023.

Both games will be season openers and will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on Sept. 4, 2022, and at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium on Sept. 3, 2023.

It’s nothing new as FSU football has opened up against non-conference power-five schools before. We’ve seen them take on Oklahoma State in 2014, Ole Miss in 2016, Alabama in 2017 and Virginia Tech in 2018.

The Noles have gone 2-2 in those games and it’s not exactly something FSU football fans are thrilled about.

Thoughts

I agree the games should be home and home, but it’s all about the mighty dollar. These games are not worth the risk involved when trying to win national championships.

The game does FSU no favors when they still have to play Florida and Clemson in those years. I’ve written time and time again playing difficult schedules nowadays is shooting yourselves in the foot.

Clemson had the No. 47 toughest schedules in 2019 and Alabama checked in at No. 49. Florida checked in at No. 34 and Penn State at No. 32, and all of these teams were either in the playoff hunt or would have been in the playoffs had they won all their games.

The other factor is where will FSU football will be by the time 2022 rolls around? Most of the sentiment lies with hoping the Noles can be competitive with the big boy programs after struggling in the last few years.

Mike Norvell has been putting in work with stabilizing the program since being hired two months ago, but he’s got major work to do if FSU doesn’t want to get embarrassed in these season openers which can set the tone for the rest of the season.

The 2017 and 2018 seasons are prime examples of it.
