FSU football: ‘Noles 10 greatest games in 2010’s decade
By Kelvin Hunt
No. 1 FSU vs. No. 2Auburn 2013 National Championship
This was arguably the best national championship game of the entire decade and you knew it had to be No. 1 since it was FSU’s third national championship.
The Noles entered the game as -11.5 betting favorites and probably would have covered had former coach Dameyune Craig wasn’t stealing FSU’s signals in the first half.
It’s crazy because it looked like Auburn knew what FSU was going to run on offense because they did! However, once Kelvin Benjamin told Jimbo Fisher Craig was stealing signals, Fisher went to the white towels and they rolled after that point.
Auburn jumped out to a 21-3 lead just before halftime before FSU engineered a huge touchdown drive right before the half to cut the lead to 21-10.
FSU got on the board first in the second half with a field goal and then scored a touchdown to but the lead to 21-20 with 10:55 remaining.
However, Auburn answered the score with a field goal to push their lead to 24-20. That’s when things got interesting as Kermit Whitfield returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to give Auburn a dose of their own medicine.
Ironically, Auburn made it to the national title game on a kick return for a touchdown against Alabama. What made this game so great was Auburn responded with a touchdown of their own to take a 28-24 lead with 1:19 remaining in the game.
Just enough time for former NFL QB Trent Dilfer to be prophetic a couple of years earlier at the Elite 11 competition Winston won while still in high school.
This was what he was prophesying here:
There it is, FSU football at the pinnacle of college football. Its third national title with arguably the best college football team ever with every starter on that team playing in the NFL.
