FSU football will be losing one of its best offensive weapons as Cam Akers declares for the NFL Draft and will skip the Sun Bowl.

It seems like it was yesterday when FSU football fans were eagerly awaiting the commitment decision of five-star running back Cam Akers.

Ole Miss fans were confident he’d stay home, but Jimbo Fisher convinced him he could be the next Dalvin Cook.

As crazy as that sounds he might could have been if he had a serviceable offensive line to run behind his three years at FSU.

He did break Dalvin Cook’s FSU freshman rushing record and break the 1,000 yard rushing mark two of his three seasons behind a terrible offensive line and suspect QB play.

Akers ultimately rushed for 2,874 yards with 27 touchdowns and 69 receptions for 486 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He didn’t become the next Dalvin Cook, but certainly gave his all during his time with FSU football.

Thoughts

It’s the right move for Cam Akers as he’s proven he’s a quality back that can run for power and be productive in the passing game.

The quicker he can get to the league the quicker he can get to his second contract and really make some money as running backs only have so many miles on their legs.

At least he didn’t take the AJ Dillon route at Boston College and have over 600 carries in his college career.

He finishes No. 6 all-time on the FSU rushing list and has the seventh highest single year rushing total in FSU football history.

Akers’ departure means the Noles will have a huge hole at the position as Khalan Laborn would be the team’s most experienced running back and he has less than 70 career rushing attempts in his college career. However, it seems Anthony Grant could return to FSU next season which would help with depth at the position.

The Noles currently have one running back committed for 2020 and will need at least one more. Good luck to Cam Akers and it was a pleasure watching you in the garnet and gold.
