Here’s a preview of FSU basketball and their upcoming games scheduled for play during the 2019-20 season.

For the first time in a long while, the FSU basketball season starts off with both an ACC game and a wonder of what will take place following two straight seasons where head coach Leonard Hamilton watched as the Seminoles went to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament each season – but still fell short of making it to the Final Four.

This season is going to be a much different world as Hamilton enters his 18th season leading the Noles – because if he is going to get back to the second weekend at least and maybe make an effort to get to the second Final Four in program history, it’s going to require them to do so without players like Terance Mann, Mfiondu Kabengele and others.

It starts this week with a duo of road contests that are going to tell us very quickly if the hopes should be higher for this season – or if the road is going to be tough for the Seminoles just to get back to the postseason at all.

Here’s our recap of the last season’s action and a preview of what’s ahead for the Seminoles.

Last Season Recap

After a regular season that included a record setting win over rival Florida and wins in 12 of the team’s final 13 regular season games, FSU basketball continued to play great basketball in the ACC tournament with wins over both Virginia Tech and eventual national champs Virginia to make to their third championship in program history.

The NCAA tournament started with a  rough win over Vermont that had people worried – until the second round, in which the Seminoles dominated Murray State and the eventual No. 2 pick in the draft, Ja Morant, to advance to the Sweet 16 round where they would lose to Gonzaga and finish the season with a record of 29-8.

The 29 wins set the record for most in the history of the FSU basketball program and led to two players – Mann and Kabengele – both being drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers last June in the NBA Draft.

Opponent Preview

The Seminoles get the party started this Wednesday when they travel to Pittsburgh to face a Panthers team looking to rebound under second year head coach Jeff Capel. Last season, the men in blue and yellow finished with a 14-19 record that included just three wins in ACC play – but one of those wins was a blowout victory over the Seminoles.

On Sunday, the Seminoles head down to Gainesville for their annual rivalry game with the hated Gators – another team looking to bounce back from a rough season by their standards. In 2018-19, the Gators and head coach Mike White finished with a 20-16 record – including another loss to the Seminoles – and were knocked out in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Interesting Fact

FSU Basketball starts off the season with a much tougher game than normal – but under Hamilton, the Seminoles have done very well in openers and lost just one time in the last 17 seasons, when the dropped the opener of the 2012-13 season in a five point upset to South Alabama.
