FSU football: 3 takeaways from ‘Noles loss against Virginia
By Kelvin Hunt
This Loss Is Clearly On the Defense
Listen, the FSU offense didn’t play great but they played well enough to win the game. James Blackman wasn’t the problem folks, it’s the defense that gave up three consecutive touchdowns in the fourth quarter
Virginia averaged 8.2 yards per play in the fourth quarter on top of all the dumb penalties the defense committed(a couple of wack calls) but still.
That is atrocious.
FSU fans are incorrectly blaming time of possession for the defense’s performance in the fourth quarter.
Listen, Virginia only ran SIX more offensive plays than FSU. That’s all folks. There is absolutely no reason Virginia should have that kind of success against a team as talented as FSU.
The UVA two-point conversion by Bryce Perkins was a prime example. FSU’s defense gets pressure and has him running for his life, yet he runs like 40 yards and runs into the end zone untouched.
The Cavaliers converted five of 12 third downs and the fact they only had 12 third downs to try to convert is telling.
Yes, the defense forced two turnovers, but they were more so a result of Perkins being inaccurate than anything else. Both turnovers took place deep in FSU territory too, so things could have been even worse if not for that.
