FSU football: Top 10 impact players for Noles in 2019
By Kelvin Hunt
D.J. Matthews is “silky smooth” according to FSU offensive coordinator Kendal Briles. The junior slot receiver had a solid year in 2018 all things considered.
I know he was frustrated with the quarterback play last season as he was often open but the ball wouldn’t find him.
However, that shouldn’t be a problem with his roommate James Blackman as the starting quarterback. In fact, Matthews has arguably his best game last year in Blackman’s lone start against NC State.
He finished that game with 10 receptions for 133 yards and a touchdown. Matthews had 42 receptions for 382 yards and that aforementioned touchdown in 2018.
Much like Helton, Matthews should benefit from Tamorrion Terry taking attention away from them.
He is also a valuable weapon in the punt return game. It was the lone bright spot on the special teams unit where he averaged over 13 yards per return with one touchdown.
I expect Matthews to have a big season as this will be his money year if he wants to declare for the NFL Draft.
