FSU football has released their depth chart for the Boise State game. Were there any surprises of note? I give my quick thoughts on the news.

FSU football is now in official game week preparation. My goodness it seems like this was the longest offseason.

Well, it was since the Noles didn’t play in a bowl game for the first time in my life time. FSU announced their starting quarterback late Sunday night with redshirt sophomore James Blackman earning the nod.

Monday morning they released their full depth chart for the Boise State game. Most of it went as expected but there were a few surprises.

Check it out below:

Thoughts

One of the first things I noticed was Janarius Robinson getting the nod over Joshua Kaindoh coming off the edge. The latter did miss a bit of camp with a bum hamstring though.

True freshman Dontae Lucas starting at guard on the offensive line is huge. That’s a clear message to all talented offensive linemen who early enroll. If you’re good enough and put in the work, there’s playing time to be had at FSU.

Keith Gavin is starting at wide receiver but Ontaria Wilson is there with the OR underneath. If Gavin isn’t productive or disappears, it’ll likely be a wrap for him outside of kickoff returns. I still don’t understand him being there, but he’s huge and likely can absorb those hits better than a smaller player.

That goodness Khalan Laborn isn’t on kickoff return anymore. True freshman Renardo Green being second team behind Asante Samuel Jr. is a statement. He wasn’t an early enrollee either.

Jaiden Lars-Woodbey getting the nod at linebacker alongside Dontavious Jackson should be a very good duo there.

I like seeing Akeem Dent at safety right now as that’s probably the best use of his skills considering who the Noles have at cornerback.

A healthy Carlos Becker with the OR underneath Hamsah Nasirildeen is huge at safety. I’ve always been high on Becker and hope he can contribute this year.

All in all, looks like a talented group that has the potential to surprise a lot of folk this year.
