FSU Alums: Cal Raleigh is playing lights out in minor leagues
By Kelvin Hunt
Former FSU baseball player Cal Raleigh is having a monster season playing in the Seattle Mariner’s farm system.
Former FSU baseball player Cal Raleigh is in what athletes call the zone. The zone usually lasts for a game or two of when a player is supremely focused and confident with the results to back it up.
Raleigh has been in the zone for nearly a month while playing Class A(Advanced) ball for the Modesto Nuts of the Seattle Mariner’s farm system.
He was drafted in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft (No. 90 overall) after a All-American and All-ACC 2018 season..
Raleigh had a good rookie season batting .288 with eight home runs and 29 RBI’s in 38 games in 2018.
He got off to a slow start and had a batting average of just .209 in mid-May before starting to put things together at the plate.
Raleigh is now batting .263 overall and has a .345 batting average over the past 30 days. He’s batting .394 through eight games in July.
Most impressively, Raleigh has 20 home runs and 61 RBI on the season with 13 of those home runs coming in the last 20 games.
Thoughts
All of that is mostly covering his offensive prowess, but check the final stat in the last tweet. He’s throwing out 38 percent of all runners attempting to steal a base which is an excellent number since it’s ranked No. 1 obviously.
The numbers in the last tweet were before he launched two home runs Wednesday night. Raleigh was always able to hit for average and power at FSU.
However, hitting with aluminum bats is a different world compared to hitting with wood. It’s great to see he’s able to do both as a professional and likely why he was drafted so highly out of FSU along with his defensive prowess.
If he keeps putting up these ridiculous numbers he’ll be in the show in a couple of years if not before.
