FSU Football: How ‘Noles offense can learn from Mixed Martial Arts

How To Attack Defenses
I have to be honest, I think FSU football has been terrible at scheming how to attack defenses this season.
Especially early on, it seemed FSU was dead set on trying to establish the run no matter what and it cost them.
Now as I mentioned, they have gone to a more pass oriented attack over the past few weeks. However, one thing I’ve noticed is they are not taken advantage of the talent they have on the field.
Case in point, why on earth is Tamorrion Terry not getting more targets each game?
I’m pretty sure I type that at least twice every game on social media. It’s ridiculous, the kid has 23 catches for 505 yards with seven touchdowns. If the quarterback looks over and Terry has single coverage he should be given the opportunity to make a play.
I thought this offense was about getting the ball to its playmakers? He is the most explosive playmaker on the team and only has three on more receptions in three games this season.
There was a sequence when James Blackman hit Terry for a huge gain and then went right back to him on the next play for a touchdown and NC State.
That’s how it should be when you have an impact player with an advantage. He was killing that defensive back and should have had double digit targets in the game and almost every game from here on out.
FSU football has better athletes at the skills positions than 95 percent of the teams they’ll face. Let those guys go make plays. Put Cam Akers in the flat to catch passes and let D.J. Matthews terrorize linebackers in space.
If they identify a weakness on a team they should look to exploit it as much as possible just like NC State did with AJ Westbrook Saturday.
Who says you have to be balanced with who you pass the ball too? Eventually teams will make an adjustment to FSU going to a player repeatedly which will open up a hole somewhere else on the defense.
The goal in MMA is to identify weaknesses and put your opponent where they are most vulnerable. If you scout an opponent and know he can’t stop a takedown then you should work on your wrestling for that matchup and take advantage. Keep taking him down and beating him up would be the most effective strategy.
Just like if a team has a suspect secondary, FSU should be repeatedly going to its playmakers over and over(yes, I know the offensive line is terrible and it puts the QB in harms way if they can’t block).
I know being a MMA fan Walt Bell understands these concepts and probably is trying to implement them. However, we need to see them as soon as possible.
Hopefully we’ll see more of FSU football using its impact players going forward as FSU tries to win two of its next three games to keep its bowl streak alive.
